Digital TV Broadcast delayed versus Analogue

I was asked the other day why Digital TV was delayed when compared to the same Analogue program. This is particularly noticable when you are trying to watch something teamed with a simulcast FM broadcast (eg Roy and HG on triple J during the State of Origin). Basically it is due to the decompression and decoding required to convert the signal received to a viewable picture on your TV. This decompression can take between 1/50 of a second up to 1 and a half seconds. The longest decompression/decoding time is found on HD signals.
