Cyc'd European Tour 2014 - Day 3 Mont Revard (and Col do Cuz twice)

Now, this post comes with a bit of a caveat. After getting destroyed by Neil (from embrace) I managed to stay with him today and get a 10th overall on strava for the climb. So everything from this point on will be slightly tarnished with the "everything is awesome" brush (yes queue the song from the Lego movie)

With that out of the way it's back to the day. First of all after a number of requests we have started a video catch up with a few people. Here is Danny giving a preview of today's stage.

There is also a recap on yesterday from Danny http://instagram.com/p/pqDFjZATdY/ and a comment from the polka dot jersey winner from yesterday Steve http://instagram.com/p/pqFVnhgTfA/

While this was all going on however Matt managed to sneak out to have an attack on the Col du Chateau, determined to take the KOM before we go home.

Today we tackled Mont Revard, with a a smaller Col on the way out and back. Mont Revard is almost the same height as Colombier that we tackled yesterday but at a much friendlier gradient. The whole ride was much hillier than yesterday. But still with smiles from ear to ear (despite the slightly heavier legs than a few days ago) we all headed out in another gorgeous day of French country side (Photo credit: Flynn).

The first (minor) Col of the day (Col du Cru) came pretty quickly and after quite the pep talk from RJB and Flynn (mostly about tyre pressure) I took their advice and attacked on the climb hoping to draw out some other riders before the big climb of the day. Stephen (yesterday's polka dot taker) was quickly on my wheel and we set a reasonable pace up the climb before the whoosh of the attack from Matt spurred us into action. After a few attacks back and forth I saw my chance (thinking that we were near the top) and went for a sprint. Once slowing down for the bus stop (I'd mistaken for the top of the Col) Neil and Stephen flew past me yelling the top was up further. With one last push I managed to get back on their group and put a little kick in to take my first (admittedly minor) Col. Of course on reflection of the strava data we'd missed the segment all together.

The best part of course was that the climb opened into a high speed descent into Chambery and we all tucked into a group and flew down into the town where (after practising our urban cycling skills) we stopped to refuel before heading up to tackle Mont Revard. Our climbing efforts very soon eclipsed through the town when an old lady on her pedalec dropped us all up a hill out of town.

Jason attacked early on the climb putting a big gap between him and the rest of the peloton at the 18km mark. A group of chasers Craig, Myself, Stephen and Matt formed lead by Neil and the attack of the climb began.

Bruce's take on today: Colombier was on and off yesterday where as today the intensity was truly endless and just uncomfortable.

After catching Jason, slowly the chasers dropped off one by one until it was just Neil, Craig and Myself pushing to the top. I dropped off on the last climb after an attack from Craig but put in a massive sprint to catch them (with some dispute as to whether it was before after the line) with Craig claiming the line honours, but with such fast times that I managed to sneak into the top 10 on the Strava leaderboard.

Everyone put in an amazing effort on a climb that was unrelenting.

The climb was worth the effort because the views were just amazing.

While waiting at the top it was amazing to hear a few other Aussie riders when a group form the AG2R 2nd tier team (some ex Brisbane riders as well) finished the climb just after us and caught up for a chat.

We all stopped for a coffee at the top before descending back to Chambery to then attack the Col de Cus from the other side. Jason again went on the attack early and the same chasers jumped into action. Craig was an absolute machine sitting on the front for the entire 15km climb only to lead out Matt for the sprint finish.

The final trip home resulted in our first flat (and second) of the tour after 325km with 15 riders is a pretty amazing statistic.

Wednesday Awards
Green Socks -> Anthony, for pushing through the climb sick (resulting in him being sick... Twice!) and for deciding we should head back down the mountain for a coffee when the coffee shop we were next to was open
Pink Socks -> Jason for being the most combative rider on the day pushing out early on all the climbs and starting the attacks.

Special mention today for Tracey for posting 22 entries in top 10 leader boards and 1 QOM

Tomorrow is our rest day (most of us were cursing a rest day looking at the schedule from our desks at home but are now very welcoming now it's here) despite the best intentions to stay up to watch the stars just about everyone has succumbed to the efforts from today and is back to bed.
