The Desk of DOOM!!!!! da da daaaaaaaa
My Parents have a terrible record with technology, specifically PC based technology. Last night I think I discovered the reason... I think my parents have The (computer) desk of doom. Not only did the PC hard lockup (after working fine at my place), the ethernet adapter stopped working AND my new removable HDD died...

you could make them use another desk - wasn't there a "spare" desk from your place that made its way over in that direction?
Makes me wonder if there is a magnet in it. :)
